Jim needs money and finds an online ad for a house sitter. His interview consists of meeting the home owner and her son. Tony tells him what is expected and Mrs. Marino says she is afraid of what’s in the house and Jim will hear it if he stays there. Surprisingly Jim is fine with that.
Jim’s friend Colin and Colin’s girlfriend Allison come over to visit. Colin is loud and kind of a douche, which makes Jim seem sensitive in comparison. Later you realize Jim is super mopey and one of those guys that is tough to hang out with because he’s always softly correcting you. Part of his sadness is because his mother died a couple years ago. It doesn’t help that he has no job, and recently moved. There is also an incident with his dad and sister that is alluded to but never explained.
Allison is a piece of work. She says she loves Colin, but tries to seduce Jim. Since Jim likes Allison, it only takes a couple attempts for her to sleep with him. This leads to a scene which will send you off to snoresville as Jim and Allison philosophize in a depressed manner. Nope, don’t care for it or about it.
The movie has various dates between scenes and I wasn’t paying much attention to them which caused me a hell of a lot of confusion. For some reason, I thought Jim was staying in the house because Mrs. Marino couldn’t be left alone. I was wondering why they were never in the room together. Then they were together but it turned out to be a dream. Yet it reinforced my misunderstanding that they were both in the house at the same time. Only later in the film did I realize the dates were not chronological. So as we switch back and forth between Jim and Mrs. Marion, the dates are to show they are not there together. Stupid non-chronological movie… or more accurately I should have realized the dates were there for a reason.
There is nothing in the movie like the creature on the cover and for the most part nothing happens except for Jim moping around.
It’s not that spooky when you can escape by walking away. |
It looks more like a family lecture than a job interview. |
He ordered a meat lovers pizza. So what’s this? |
Modern homes aren’t very creepy, even with a door under the stairs. |
