Amityville Curse (2023)

Six college friends buy the Amityville murder house and move in. Marvin is a professor and his fiancĂ© Debbie is a teacher. Frank is a district attorney.  Billy owns a restaurant and her girlfriend Lucy might work there.  Then there is Abigail, a contractor who is going to do the work.  I’m hoping they put more down than she did, otherwise, this isn’t a great deal for her.

The plan is to split the house into three condos, which is confusing because only four of the six are couples. So do the two singles own the last condo together? We’ll never know since Frank quickly makes an exit from an upstairs window.

News of the death brings newscasters and curiosity seekers out of the wood work. One is a podcaster who says his fans have been begging him to do an episode about the home. After he stealthily tapes Abigail making sarcastic comments and posts them, the group decides to do damage control. They give him an interview and allow him to stay in the house overnight.  Before they know it, he’s running out of the house screaming and becomes the victim of a hit and run.

Within a month three of the friends are dead and there are arguments over whether to sell it or not.  They ask Cole, the head of the Parapsychology department at the college, to come to the house. He offers himself as a conduit and things do not go as planned. Is anyone going to get out of this house alive?

While they’re all college grads, they don’t seem to have good critical thinking abilities. They bought a murder house and are now surprised that people are obsessed with what is going on inside it. Half the friends die along with the podcaster, but they continue to live there.  Also Marvin previously dated Abigail and proposed to her, but now he’s engaged to Debbie.  So it’s kind of odd for them to purchase a home together, especially when Debbie is extremely jealous to the point of not wanting him to be alone with Abigail.

The time frame is hard to track as it seems like three peope die in a couple days, but then we’re told a month has passed. And while I understand if you’ve just put all your money in a house you don’t have money to go elsewhere, but damn, when half of you die, get the hell out of that house.

As people kept dying, I couldn’t help but think of the financial implications.  They started with six people splitting the cost. Who is paying the mortgage now? Does their share increase each time someone dies? Even if their estate should pay their share, the others would have to cover it for awhile to avoid defaulting.  The financial burden keeps increasing and people keep making bad decisions.

Ridiculous dialogue

You’re so desperate to label anything paranormal, you overlook the obvious diagnosis in this case. Mass hysteria.

The sledge hammer inscribed with everyone’s names.
