The Purgation (2015)

Edie drives her brother Derrick and his preteen friends to an isolated wooded area so they can go on an adventure. She says she’ll pick them up at 6pm. Edie is not concerned with child safety.

Derrick, Iris, Marlene, and Caden go into the abandoned asylum, which is only a basement now.  They plan to make a movie but when they start filming something happens. I’m confused about what but it ends up with kids screaming in the dark. Also Caden goes missing, but no one looks for him and we discover he’s imaginary.

In an abrupt cut, we go to Iris, the only one who made it out of the asylum without a total meltdown.  She’s now an adult and has come to town to do an assignment about the asylum. Is it a podcast, tv show or journalism?

It turns out Iris wants to be a filmmaker. She and her coworker visit Edie, whose reaction seems to be, “uh alright.” Derrick lives with Edie, but hasn’t been the same since that day.  He doesn’t speak and is numb to what’s around him.  They talk about him as if he isn’t there, but that night he has an interaction with Iris that spooks her.

Later she visits Marlene and her mother. Marlene is even more unappealing than when she was a child. Marlene says screw you, and Iris has dinner with her mother.  After dinner Iris visits Marlene alone in her room. Marlene is blindfolded and tied to a chair. She asks Iris to let her go. Iris isn’t very bright and asks if it’s okay with her mother. Since her mother is the only one in the house, I’m sure the answer is no.  But idiot Iris unties Marlene and things go poorly.

There is no pay off to this movie and you wonder why Iris would go back and talk to her friends when they were so traumatized they can’t live normal lives.

Ridiculous dialogue

Should we really be doing this stuff in a church?
It’s a chapel.

Hey Marlene, I can’t believe we’re going to film inside a crazy house.

Iris and her ever present expression
We know Marlene has never tried to escape since the part
of her arm tied to the chair is larger than her wrist
I’m sure it’s fine to drop kids off in an isolated area with a bulkhead
to a basement of an abandoned psych ward
The rolling stairs lead to the bulkhead
The bulkhead nowhere near a building, sitting in a field
