Archie and Nathan have an assignment to make a film based on a book and aren’t sure which book to use. At the library they find an odd old book on one of the shelves. It has no Dewey decimal number on the spine, and no card pocket or scan code inside it. The librarian tells them she’s never seen it before. They are excited that they’re the first ones to take it out. I’m wondering if they’ve ever used a library before since all evidence points to it not being a library book.
After spending a half hour googling, they find a web site with the symbol someone drew on the first page of the book. It is an Icelandic magical stave which represents cults that use supernatural elements of time to make themselves immortal. However it requires regular sacrifices and if you don’t do this, you get trapped between worlds.
They figure out the Roman numerals written in the book could be coordinates on a map. When they punch in the numbers, they find they’re only an hour away from the spot. Though it’s late in the day, they decide to drive out. It’s dark when they arrive and they find the building at the coordinates looks like the building drawn in the book.
There is a padlocked chain link fence around the property, but when they explore a dirt road, it brings them to a gate only partially intact. They hop the gate and head over to the building, where they climb in a broken window to see if they can find anything.
When will anyone learn if there’s a cult involved, the building is fenced off, and you’re feeling things are off, you don’t go exploring in the abandoned cult building. When they see the old book inside the building, Archie accuses Nathan of putting it there as a joke. How could he? They drove up together and haven’t been apart since they found the book.
This is a found footage movie so we know how this is going to end. For once, the characters are likeable enough. The movie is less than an hour, and goes pretty quickly. The end of the movie says their cameras were found in 2006, but the footage in the camera is dated 2019. But that’s not as big an aha as the filmmakers thought since the camera owner is responsible for setting the date in the camera.
